My Filming Experience for High School Musical 3!!

Nessa May 19th, 2008

WOW!!! I just want to write about my incredible experience as being an Extra in the filming of High School Musical 3!! This is my first experience as an Extra in a film, and Korban and I were definitely anticipating what the experience would be like. Upon arrival it almost seemed chaotic as they piled hundreds of us extras into the East High School auditorium here in Salt Lake City. They kept moving us around in the auditorium based on whether we were there before, or new people, or those with no appropriate wardrobe, those with multiple colored wardrobe, and it seemed that half the students didn’t want to listen or obey many instructions. We actually sat around for 4 hours doing nothing as they selectively only took about 60 people out of the auditorium who were the previous people sitting behind the character, Vanessa, during a basketball scene. We decided to leave our seats and sit down in the hallways in the back of the auditorium and decided that if we were not called by 5pm, we would just leave and forget about being extras. Just then, the assistant who was pulling extras walked past us and I heard him say he would take 30 more red shirted people with him. Korban and I used that as our cue and quickly put on our red shirts and jumped up to be first in line to leave. We walked over to the set where we piled up on the stadium in the gym. It was really exciting to see the set and all the pretty lights and cameras. Our first scene was for the ending of the game where we cheer like crazy for the Wildcats who had just won a game, and then run off the stadium onto the floor. I had two white pom-poms and i stood right next to the two tuba players in the Wildcats Band. It was a lot of yelling, surprised looks, disappointed looks, and excitement we had to show. The director, Kenny Ortega, had a microphone and would yell out commands about how we are feeling, what he wanted to see, where he wanted the cameras, and how he wanted us to cross the cameras. There was a lot of confused looks because half the crowd would just talk and not pay attention and we would end up doing the shot wrong. I felt bad for all the assistants who couldn’t get half the undisciplined kids to just listen and obey the commands. We continued doing a lot of awesome background shots while the actors played out their scenes. There seemed to be a lot of swooning from young girls all around me who were excited to see Zac Efron and Corbin Bleu so close to us. They were really nice and would entertain our crowd by doing basketball shoots and random dance moves and break dancing to keep us happy while off scene. We missed seeing the part where Vanessa sits in the crowd and sings to her boy, Zac, but she would walk side stage past us a couple times and wave as the wild boys around me yelled her name and whistled at her. The only other main character we never got to see was Ashley who was rumored to be at some family emergency.

I loved being able to see my favorite choreographer, Chucky Klapow, work with the basketball actors to do their moves right. He also helped a lot in other scenes keeping us Extras doing the right moves while cheering our “teams” on. I really wanted to shake his hand and just say something cheesy like “You are awesome!”, but the best I got is that Chucky came up to me and had me move from one location on the set to the other, and I at least got to just look into his pretty eyes and smile some cheesy grin at him. I guess that was good enough for me. I admired his enthusiasm and energy on the set. He was my guiding star for half the scenes and really made being on the set a lot of fun.

The director, Kenny Ortega, was absolutely FABULOUS. He was so much fun to work with!! I even had a chance to walk by him in the hall way, I lightly punched him in the arm and said, “Hey! You are Awesome!” and he turned towards me and said, “You are awesome too!!”. He would take breaks from shooting to just talk to to us about having fun and helping to make this movie real and awesome. He would stop and do contests to let us win t-shirts and signed basketballs throughout the day and night. He was extremely patient (for the most part) with all of us. A few times him and his assistants just could not get the extras to be silent and he had to yell at a few individuals that they better be silent or leave. It was very annoying that half the kids would not listen or not stop talking after being told over a dozen times to be silent. The lack of respect and obedience from all the kids was really making a lot of scenes drawn out and making our night last longer. The other thing that amazed me was the age selection for us. The instructions I received was that no extras may be under the age of 14, but half the people we sat around were 9,10,11,12!! I’m sure i saw some kids even younger with their frantic mom’s pushing them to the limit with their energy and patience to even participate in the movie. I learned that the day before they shot for 16.5 hrs with most of the kids not being released from set till about 2:30 in the morning. Once again on Sunday the call was at noon, and a lot of us were there until past 2 am. I couldn’t understand why these mom’s i saw were pushing their grumpy little kids over the edge, to the point where I sat next to some who refused to even stand or move and sat in the crowd that had to be actively cheering and jumping on cue. I am thinking it will lead to a lot of awesome background scenes with me being cut just because I was sitting around motionless child zombies who I am sure would not want to be shown in the final cut.

Korban and I had a cool small experience to be 1 foot away from Zac, Vanessa, and Corbin as we left the set for lunch break and we went to walk to our cars and saw all three standing with a couple cops on the sidewalk. Korban really wanted to say something like “Have a great lunch!” but decided not to in the end. We just looked and smiled at them and made ourselves look non-threatening. I think as Extras it is very important to be respectful to the actors and the rules for being on set. The rules were very strict for not having cameras or cellphones in sight on the set. The consequences if caught with a cell phone in sight, even if you were not taking pictures, is that the cops would completely wipe the memory card, every picture, and every text message on the phone. Regardless of anything was related to HSM3 or not. I think those rules were very justified and I was amazed at how many people still tried to take cell phone pictures and who seemed very upset to lose everything on their cell phone. I figured it is what you deserve if you decide not to follow the rules.

My favorite scene out of everything we shot was when I was able to participate in being a blue ‘Knight’ cheering on our West team. We got to do scenes with so much emotion where we had to be screaming with joy one second, shouting in agony, pain, and disappointment the next, and then completely be frozen in a dreamlike stare off into the distance as Zac performed a small epic song. They did some trick where we were filmed at normal speed to a song that was set twice as fast to create an effect that when we were slowed down again, our mouths would move correctly to words but our bodies would be slowed down. We ended in a frozen state in a backdrop that I am sure would look amazing while they did a cool scene of Zac. During all the cheering rehearsals, I was nick-named by one of the assistants as the “Party Girl” which landed me a sweet spot right behind the cheerleaders. I really hope a few of those scenes will land me a 5 second fame section in the final cut. I was very comfortable by the end of the day of my capabilities to act. In the end I learned how to really make myself feel like I was in the game with full school spirit and emotion, as well as interacting with people around me to give them looks, high fives, hugs of emotions, and dances of joy. I think this was a beautiful start to a beautiful side career as an Extra and I hope I can get invited to be Extras in many more films.

My husband, Korban, really impressed me with his enthusiasm in doing this with me. He looks so awesomely handsome and young that I was starting to get jealous when I saw young Jr High and High School girls flirting with him. Nobody could believe he was really 27, nor even believe that he was married. I think we both fit in perfectly as ‘High School’ fans. The only problem is that today i have NO VOICE from all the screaming, yelling, and singing. Not to mention my body aches from all the jumping, dancing, and cheering. It was an awesome workout for sure. Thank you utahextras.com for giving Korban and I this wonderful experience, and to all the crew of HSM3 who made our experience even better, especially Kenny and Chucky!! :)

Cabin Weekend!

Nessa February 24th, 2008

This weekend I went to the cabin with my dad-in-law Kent and my true love Korban! We met up with our uncle Dale and had a blast! We went snowmobiling, snowshoe hiking to our waterfall, relaxed at the cabin, and Dale and I even wrestled in the snow! Here are some pictures of us!
